Samsung tab a sd card problems

I just inserted a 32gb sd card in my Samsung tab a. Do I have to format the card before I use it ? The tablet recognizes it but I can't seem to transfer downloaded movies to it. I'm tech illiterate.  How do I transfer the movies  ? Can I have the sd card recognized as internal storage ? What's my next step ? Thanks
