Was prompted by my phone Friday that there an update for my phone. So I let it run. Since then I have lost my USB connection capability. When I plug-in my cord or connect through the settings, I get:
“Sorry…Process com.android.setting stopped unexpectedly. Try again”
The only way I can download/upload between is to remove my SD card and load it directly to my computer. If anybody has the same or any other problems, please post.
Hey VZW... how about a solution!!!???

Hello community members! What an interesting situation you all have going on after the update. Often times after a software update is completed a factory reset becomes necessary. I know completing this step can be a bit painful, but it resolves so many minor problems that pop up after the update. Please select the link for instructions: http://tinyurl.com/cnw949x
Let me know if this resolves your USB problems. Have a great day.

My son's Stratosphere is having the same problem with connectivity, also the phone won't charge sometimes when plugged in. Most of the time it shows it's charging even when it isn't plugged in. We can't figure out any other problems because it won't stay on long enough to notice anything.
I have 2 other Stratospheres I will not be updating!

Basically the same for me after the latest update. I have not had any problems forcing a stop by hitting OK on the message.
More stuff acts differently after the update, i.e., the screen dims but never blanks out like it did before. Is this supposed to happen?
Firmware is 2.3.6, kernel is 2.6.35.7-FF1, build number SCH-I405,FF1.

Factory reset fixed the problem I had, but certainly don't care for having to reload almost everything on the phone.

A simple power cycle fixed my USB connection issue, but I hate this update and wish I could remove it. It has slowed things down noticeably, cut battery life in half (not an exaggeration), and now I have to constantly turn the wi-fi off and then back on to stay connected. Even with a good connection, it takes much longer to load anything using either wi-fi or 4g. This applies to browsers, apps, pic messages, anything data related. Some apps, like facebook, won't even load at all most of the time. We have two of these phones in our household, and they are both having the same issues. Factory reset has been no help. The only functional improvement I've noticed from the update is the camera; it's much more responsive and has zoom capabilities now. This one small improvement in functionality combined with the aesthetic changes are not worth the several significant impairments to functionality IMO.
Is there any way to remove this update, or are we stuck with it?

That's a fairly poor solution without also providing information on how to restore the phone to its original configuration. Maybe you should add a warning on the install that tells the user that they may have to perform a "Factory Reset" before performing the upgrade. That should scare enough of us away from doing so. I was already hesitant and should have gone with my gut and avoided this upgrade. Oh well. Live and re-learn.

Ditto. Same problem. Every time I connect my USB cable for charging it gives the same error "...process com.android.settings stopped unexpectedly...". It didn't seem like a problem at first because it was still charging the phone, but yesterday I wanted to use the "mass storage" functionality. I then tried accessing the USB settings through the Settings Menu with a similar outcome. It either gives the error or just reverts to the home screen. As everybody else said this started after I updated my firmware. We need a fix, please!!

I'm still awaiting this update, and kind of mentally gathering information about potential problems. This one seems fairly widespread. Has anyone tried doing the factory reset after the update? Does it fix the USB issue?

Found a temporary "fix" to the USB issue here: https://community.verizonwireless.com/thread/781331
By following these steps, you can at least connect the phone to your computer via USB to do a backup before doing the factory wipe:
- With phone unplugged, go into Settings->Applications->Development and enable USB debugging
- Plug into USB
- Settings->USB Settings
- "OK" when prompted to turn off USB debugging
- At this point you will get the error message, but the option to connect to PC should be on the screen after you close the error
As soon as my backup is complete I will be doing the factory wipe and will let you all know if that fixed the problem.

The factory reset worked and I was able to restore everything within minutes. FYI: it appears that this error may be caused by the updated options that come with this firmware update. Prior to the update, when plugging into USB, the "Charging Only" option didn't appear (you would just hit "Cancel" to enter that mode). Considering the number of people who had this issue, obviously some more testing should have been done. But the fix is fairly easy.

Thanks for this encouraging and helpful report! I'm still waiting for the OTA, but in preparation I've done some backups, just in case (photos, shopping software data, etc.). At least I feel that if I get the USB problem I'll know what to do!
BTW, DeJuanNOnley: coolest screen name I ever saw!

you can check for the update by going to setting>about phone>.system updates but there is no manual way to get the file. Support says..and take that with a grain of salt.... that it usually takes 3 weeks max for upgrades to hit all users. Since it was released 22 Aug then we should all have it by the end of this week,,,,hopefully. Maybe....

I just got the update. The installation went very smoothly and very quickly. I hope there are some actual improvements in functionality, beyond some of the cosmetic stuff mentioned in the document: http://support.verizonwireless.com/pdf/system_update/statosphere.pdf.
After looking around the phone a bit, I tried connecting it to my computer by USB. I got the dreaded "Sorry…Process com.android.setting stopped unexpectedly. Try again." message. But I thought what the heck, and tried accessing the folders on my SD card from my computer anyway. No problem; I could see the folders and files despite the "error." Since then I've disconnected and reconnected it several times (always using the Windows safe-disconnect process), and the error message has stopped appearing. If it comes back, it doesn't really seem like it will prevent access, for me at least. At any rate, no way I'm doing a factory reset under these circumstances.

I ended up getting the update later the same day. No issues so far, but I don't really use the USB connectivity on my phone. I do miss the puzzle piece for unlocking the phone though...

Actually the sequence that works is as follows (as described in the link you provided).
1) Select USB Debugging and follow instructions. E.G. if it complains usb is already plugged in, unplug it, select debug, and replug in the device.
2) Then pull down the menu that should allow you to connect your device to the computer (USB prong symbol on top of screen).
Thanks for providing the link. That's a big help.
You seem to have done a reset very quickly. I looked at the Verizon process, and it seemed "dangerous." I'd like to know more about what is necessary to get my phone back to its current configuration if I do this. Can you give any insight?
Thanks

Howdy folks,
I had exactly the same problem with the update to firmware version 2.3.6 -- “Sorry…Process com.android.setting stopped unexpectedly. Try again”. Very frustrating to say the least. I, too, discovered the USB Debugging workaround, but I wasn't happy with getting an error message every time I plugged or unplugged my phone. And like others have said, the system seemed to operate WORSE after the update. Things are just not supposed to work that way. And it looks like Verizon either does not know what to do about it, or they simply don't care since Galaxy S phones are practically dinosaurs now. But I like dinosaurs OK, so here's what ended up working for me. Standard disclaimer about your mileage may vary, blah, blah, blah.
Tap on Settings, then Applications, then Manage Applications, then select All.
Scroll all the way down until you reach Settings, then tap on that to open it.
You should see two 'buttons' that you can click -- "Force stop" and "Clear data"
Choose the "Clear data" option, then restart the phone. In my case, I 'lost' my wallpaper (which I replaced in 15 seconds), but everything else was in tact. Now, when I go into the "USB Settings", I no longer get an error nor do I get an error when plugging in to my computer's USB port. Oh, and did I mention that the phone is more responsive now? And maybe it's my imagination, but battery life is improved. If only it would brew coffee ...
Hope this helps someone out there. God bless America!!
