ring and notification volume can't be separated

In settings, cannot lower or raise volume for ring and volume for notifications separately. Dot on the volume bars move together. Notifications are constant.

Did your phone recently update to the Marshmallow operating system?  If so, that's how Google designed the volume to work for that OS.
