My husband and I live in Canada and will be travelling in the States for 3 weeks in August. We understand from our local contact that the only cell phone carrier that has any coverage near Mount St. Helens, Washington (where my husband will be for most of the trip) is Verizon, so we plan to each get a Verizon prepaid account and phone (I'll be in California).
Does the quality of the phone make a difference when you're in a location where cell phone reception is not reliable? Would the $29
Verizon Wireless CDM7076 Prepaid work as well as the $49 LG Accolade™ Prepaid?
We don't need anything fancy, just a chance of the phones working in a remote location!

Different phone models have different antenna designs and qualities, and that can definitely affect your ability to get a signal in a remote area. I would reccomend looking into Motorola phones, as they often have excellent reception. The W385, which I believe you can activate on pre-paid is availble for a reasonable price used or refurbished on various websites, eBay, Craigslist, etc.
If you want to buy a new prepaid model for piece of mind, start reading reviews and pick the one with the best reported reception.
I can highly recommend the LG Accolade, I live in the mountains and there are only carriers that I can get a signal with. I have never had a problem getting a signal with the Samsung 340 and now have the Accolade and get a great quality voice and signal, the other difference between the Accolade and the Verizon CDM7076 is that the Accolade has a longer battery life and I only have to recharge every over day with the.
