New Customer Prepaid Plan

I am currently shopping for a cheaper way to still have a cell phone, and not pay much since I am recently unemployed. Which is the best pre paid plan, and are there certain phones only used for this?

I use the verizon prepaid plan and have been very happy with it. I use the 99 cent plan. You only pay on the days you use it. example: if I call verizon to verizon it would be 99 cents for the day I can make as many calls for as long as I want on that 99 cents to verizon customers,  up to 9:59 pm, after that nighttime rates kick in. Text packages are $10.00 per month so if you text alot this is a great package plan, unlimited for verizon to verizon and 250 for non verizon customers. Another good service is Virgin Mobile I had them before verizon and only went to verizon because my whole family is on verizon and that made it cheaper for me. Virgin Mobile charges $20.00 for 3 months, verizon charges $30.00 for 3 months, I don't know what the per minute charge is for Virgin Mobile. There the two I can recommend, there are several others Had Tracfone at one time but moved into a mountain area and could not get a signal there and I found them to be more expensive.  Check them all out and see what fits your needs.

you could check out net10  all calls on net10 are ten cents a minute and all text messages is 5 cents a minute and you get 300 minutes just for activating the phone and i think that is every 3 months.

I've been with Net10 for over three years. Their 300-minute refill card is $30 and it lasts for 2 months (not 3), so that basically works out to $16/month including tax.. Also text messaging is only 3¢/min. with some select phones that are text-friendly (the T401G, for instance).

Depending on how you use your phone (voice, texting, who you communicate with, how often, etc.), it may or may not be the most cost-effective option for you. For instance, unlike Verizon, Net10 offers no unlimited mobile-to-mobile except on their unlimited plans (I think), and those are relatively expensive.

If you use your phone a lot, calling different people on different mobile networks, you might want to consider Straight Talk or Cricket. I can't get Cricket in my area; but they do appear to have some pretty attractively-priced package deals.
