i.e., if I had a fancy phone and was paying $300/mo I can hear crystal clear.  Right now conversations start okay then people say they can't hear me or my voice is fuzzy, so I wander around my apt until they can hear.  It's not the apt because I've had other phones and they were okay.

False.  I am on prepaid with an LG G2 and I have the same level of service I had with Postpaid.

I had T-Mobile. I got Verizon in mid-June of this year.

I'm gonna say it's not because you are on prepaid, you're just experiencing different cell reception.

A predicate phone has nothing to do with a towers transmission.  Lesser quality parts in certain low budget phones can affect reception and quality.
