I would like to switch from my prepaid plan to an a regular type service plan, and also get a new phone.
If I log in to my account and select change plan, the only option I get is a different unlimited plan (which looks like it's still prepaid) for $30 per month, and no option to get a new phone. If I select change device, it asks for the new device ID. I don't have a new device ID since I want to get a new phone while switching to a regular type plan.
If I start fresh on the website home page, and select plans->shared plans->get started it takes me to a page to select a phone. Once I select a phone, and enter my zip code, it then asks for me to choose new customer or existing customer. If I choose existing customer, it asks me uprade current line or add new line. Either choice takes me to signing into my account and I have the same problem as above.
Should I choose new customer? If I do will I be able to keep my current phone number? Will it know enough to cancel my prepaid plan once I activate the new plan?
Seems to me there ahould be an easier process for switching from a prepaid plan to a regular plan with getting a new phone. I can't be the first person who has wanted to do this.
Any help is appreciated.

I would suggest calling customer service and requesting you want to convert your prepaid account to a postpaid account.
I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

fredsvzw, I see you are interested in transferring from prepaid to postpay. My goal is to provide you with information to make this process as seamless as possible. To have your line transferred you will need to contact our Telesales team at 800-256-4646. I am confident they will be able to your line transferred over perfectly fine. Justin_VZW

You have to call Telesales and request a prepaid to postpaid migration.

I called 1-800-256-4646 and I've been trying to speak with an actual person for 7 minutes now. It just keeps routing me around and will not get me to a live person. Super annoying.

I'm sorry to see you were not able to immediately get in touch with the Telesales Team when you called a couple of days ago, akatect.
Were you able to get your number changed from prepay to post pay yet?

vzw customer service has really gone downhill...not so much the service you get when you actually speak with a person, but the roadblocks the automated system puts up to prevent you from speaking with someone. there systems are a mess and it typically takes a bounce btwn 2-4 people before you're speaking to the 'right' person to solve your particular problem.
vzw's attempt to get you to interact with their mostly useless digital assistant is particularly annoying.

I just rec'd a different number for migrations - 888.832.4540. This number came from a Verizon prepaid chat agent.
