I try to send or reply to an email and receive an error message "Socket is not connected."  what does that mean and how do I fix it?

Have you taken out the battery and put it back in?

Thank you all for your replies. In addition we also recommend testing your Internet connection. You can also try removing the email account and re-adding it, provided it is not the Gmail account attached to the phone.
