I use a S7 as my main phone. I wanted to activate an old S4 (currently just a wifi device as no service) for the purpose of porting over my 25yo home phone number, to get it to google voice eventually (i.e., phase out my landline but keep the number; sentimental)
My S7 is Verizon; my home phone is AT&T.
What SIM would I buy? I assume I need a temporary new cell # for the S4 with activation, before porting over the home phone #, right?
Is it better to just buy a burner phone to do this ($20 phone, $25 prepay card)? I do not want to mess up my S7.
Shouser144, we are happy to hear you want to continue your loyalty by porting over your landline. It’s important that we need to get you the best option and all needed information for you to port over your number successfully. Help is here. At this time, with our network upgrades, the Samsung Galaxy S4 is not able to be activated on our network. Here’s more details regarding the change: https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-218813/ We apologize for this inconvenience.
We do have some really good deals on compatible devices. Click here: https://www.verizonwireless.com/deals-landing/
To answer your questions, I can assure you adding the line will not mess up anything with your S7. Also, it will be better to purchase one of our deals and port the number over instead of buying a prepay device from another carrier. You won’t need a temporary number; however, it can take 4 – 24 hours to complete the process as long as the correct information is submitted when porting. Here’s some frequently asked questions on landline porting: https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/local-number-portability-faqs/
I know I've provided a lot of information for your review, please let me know if you have any questions.

Can I still buy a random CDMA compatible SIM from a non-Verizon prepay carrier, insert into the S4, for the porting process?
I'm trying to decide between buying a cheap SIM for S4 (5$) or a burner phone/prepay card (45$)
shouser144, thank you for continuing to work with us on the Samsung S4 activation. We would like to start by correcting the previous information provided. You are still able to activate a Samsung S4 on Verizon prepaid. You are only restricted from activating this phone on postpaid service. Therefore we would recommend to proceed with Verizon prepaid options on the following web page https://www.verizonwireless.com/prepaid/. Does this help?
