Corrupt sd card

Hello VZW Support,

BEFORE YOU READ THE REST OF THIS MESSAGE PLEASE DO NOT WASTE MY TIME OUR YOURS REPLAYING WITH A "TEMPLATED" RESPONSE. iF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO PROVIDE A DETAIL RESPONSE WITH FACTUAL SOLUTION(S) TO MY REQUEST THEN THERE IS NO NEED TO REPLY.

Device and Software Information:

Samsung Galaxy S8+ (Model: SM-G955U) running Android 8.0; Prior Version: 7.1

Purchase date: April 2017

Recent software update: G955USQS3CRE2 on May 24, 2018 at 1:22 AM

Prior to the most recent software upgrade my sd-card (which I have had for over 7 years) was working fine. This card was used in previous devices with no problem. Ever since the most recent software update on May 24, 2018 at 1:22 AM the sd-card (ScanDisk Ultra 60 gig) is no longer working. When I removed the sd-card and placed it into another cellphone that cellphone does not read the card. The card was then inserted into a laptop card read (using the card adapter) and Windows (no matter what version) and the computer still does not read or even recognize that the card is inserted. Removed the card and inserted it into an Apple computer and still the same issue. I inserted the same card into other Samsung cellphones (Note 8, Note 3, S7) and still none of those devices read the card or even recognize that the card is even present.

Took an sd-card from another device and inserted that card into my S8+ and the phone recognized that sd-card. Removed that sd-card and inserted my original sd-card back into the S8+ and the S8+ did not recognize the card. Tried to use Astro to read the card and Astro did not "see/find" the sd-card,

So despite the fact that this sd-card worked for 7 sears and have been moved from one device to another the card no longer works and appears to be corrupted after the most recent software update.

Questions:

1.  Please provide a detail and workable solution on how I can get my S8+ to recognize my sd-card that was working before the most recent software update;

2. Provide a detail explanation on as to why the card worked fine before the most recent software update but now appears to be corrupted and absolutely useless after the most recent software update;

3. What is VZW/Googl/Android going to do to prevent this issue from re-occurring.

I look forward to VZW Support's DETAIL explanation and response.

Sorry to hear about your predicament but hopefully you have everything backed up. The cards can get corrupted especially with age. My advise is before any update is applied to your phone you should remove the SD card  from the phone, download the update, then reinstall the card.  Some on here say that is really unnecessary, but I have never had an SD card problem after updates.

Thanks for the reply. What do I do if the update is pushed to the phone at 1:30 AM when I am asleep; I cannot possibly remove the card then. We should not have to remove the sd-cards from the device before the update especially if the update is pushed to the phones when we are asleep or driving or busy playing golf or tennis, etc.

I have never had an sd-card fail on me before. So it failing especially after a software update is suspicious.

Klue,

Thank you for reaching out to us here. I'm sorry to hear about what happened with your SD card not functions anymore. Seven years is a long time for the card to work and I understand the importance of getting this problem fixed. I'm certainly here to help. As far as retrieving the information from an SD card, we would need to find equipment or a device that can read the SD card and transfer the content to a safe source. I know you mentioned you've tried a number of devices and the card is unable to be read. This is the only way we can retrieve the information.

As far as discovering why the software affected the card, we really can't explain this. The content stored on the card may not be compatible with the software when it was updated. Issues like this are out of our control since we're the service provider to the phone and do not contribute to software updates on devices. Once you're able to gain access to the card's information, I recommend transferring the storage to a reliable source. You can format the SD card afterward and verify if your S8+ can read the card. Does this help?

Juan_VZW,

The sd-card was corrupted after the most recent software update. The card worked fine just before the update. No equipment I used can read the corrupted sd-card. And for you to suggest, "The content stored on the card may not be compatible with the software when it was updated" is as foolish as me trying to convince my 11 year old so that cows can orbit the moon; in real life.

Suffice to say and with no help from VZW or Samsung; the mystery of why my sd-card became corrupted remains unsolved.

As has been suggested here, if you had removed the card before doing the update, this wouldn't have happened.  Removing the card before doing updates has been often mentioned in the VZW Community for a long time.
