Individual app notification sounds gone after Oreo update

I see a lot of questions regarding the loss of contact or text notification sounds after the Oreo update, but I have lost all of my individual app notification sounds. Is there a way to get these back? I have tried going into several different apps and made changes where I can, but some (such as The Weather Channel, Twitter) simply don't have that option, even though they used to have their own individual sound when a notification came through.

I don't have all the answers, but I do know where the individual app notifications can be found.

Open up Settings

Select Notifications

Touch Advanced in the upper right corner

Locate the app that you want to change the notifications sound on

For example: Select Twitter

You will see a range of notifications that you can change under your Twitter handle

For example: Select Direct Message by touching on the words Direct Messages

If you have the Importance set to High or Urgent then there will be a setting directly below it for Sound

Touch Sound to select your notification

Unfortunately, this didn't help me at all.  The only options I have in Notifications>Advanced> for any app, is just whether notifications are on, whether App icon badges are on, and whether allow sound is on.  I can only turn it off or on, I can't change the sounds.

In the tech write-ups for Oreo, we were supposed to get Notification Channels and Notification dots.  I have neither.  The settings menu was supposed to change to have some sort of combined "Applications and Notifications" directly under Settings. Not there.  All that's happened is I've lost the ability to change my notification sounds for anything but system apps.  And, yes, all my apps are up to date.

Not all the apps have the options to adjust the sound.  Only certain ones like Twitter, The Weather Channel, Gmail, Messages, or Message+ have the option to actually change the notification sound.

Yes, the problem I'm having is with Ring.  They used to have a long list of possible notification sounds.   Now the option to change tones is missing from inside the app.  The thing that puzzles me is that Verizon's version of Oreo is not working the way Android says it should.  I gave some details in my earlier message.  So I can't change things the old way, and the new way apparently wasn't implemented.

Ceaton70, we realize it's important to get alerts. I'm sorry this changed with the Oreo update. After any software update, you want to make sure you update all your apps. Please go to the Play Store to make sure you complete any pending updates.

Please keep us posted.

Vanessa - yes, my apps are all up to date. That was the very first thing I tried.  One of the big changes with Oreo is to Notifications.  Android Central says we should have gotten:

1. Notification categories

2. Notification Dots

3. There should also have been a change to the Settings menu, with a new option: "Apps and Notifications", rather that two separate items for Notifications and Apps.

I have none of these.  All that has changed with Notifications is that I can't change them via the application itself . Since the new tools in Oreo were not implemented, I can't change them at all.  So the obvious question is, what's going on and when will this be fixed?

You would need to direct that question to Ring. For the notification functionality to operate properly for the phone’s operating system the application would have to be optimized to the Android OS version.

Ring’s Application developers have not yet updated their app to be compatible with Oreo notifications, but according to their support site (https://support.ring.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005889863-How-to-Use-App-Alert-Tones ) they are working on it. Once complete & tested you’ll be able to download their updated App version from the Google Play store

MAPlumb, your experience with your phone is very important to us. The most recent update moved most of the notification sound customizations to directly within each app. deloused, provided some great information about this being related to Ring directly when you are experiencing this problem for one app. In addition here is a web page with information about Ring http://spr.ly/6583DwcjB and scroll down to the developer section to email them and inquire further about your experience with the app. I hope this is beneficial.

DavidC_VZW, This seems exactly opposite of all the other information I've received.  Ring says, "I’m sorry to hear this! Are you operating Oreo? Ringtones can only be changed by the user via phone settings on Android 8.0/Oreo at the moment."  I used to be able to change the sounds inside the app, now they've migrated to the system.  Except that they aren't there.  I did email them asking for further information.

I'm also puzzled that under Settings my phone continues to show two separate menu items of "Notification" and "Apps".  These were supposedly combined into a new menu item "Apps and Notifications" which has additional functionality as relates to notifications.  Everywhere I look for assistance in changing notifications, directs me first to this new menu item "Apps and Notifications" which I don't have.
