Notifications pop up while my screen is off

Ever since a recent system update, notifications pop up on my screen while the screen is turned off.   Before the update, I had it set up so my they would only pop up while my screen was turned on.  Is there a way I can avoid having text message notifications pop up while my screen is off?

Updates are meant to improve the performance of your device not hinder them and we will gladly look to see what options are available to set up your notifications as you see fit. What is the make and model of the phone in question? Are you just wanting to stop your text messages from popping up on your screen or all notifications? What messaging application are you using?

I have a Samsung Galaxy S8+ and I was using the default messaging app on the phone.   But since then I've downloaded a third party messaging app that doesn't have this issue.
