Verizon message+ and lock screen note 5

I have the Note 5 and recently switched to Verizon message+ from the samsung messaging app. The regular messaging normally would light up the phone and say 1 new message. However, VM+ does not light up the lock screen, it only vibrates and the blue led turns on so I don't notice it. I know there is the option to have it popup over the lock screen, however I do not wish to have the whole message displayed on the lock screen. I have tried the hide content feature in settings, however it still does not work. Is there a way for the lock screen to light up the way the regular samsung messaging app works?

I saw that online and tried it, it still just vibrates and flashes the blue LED. It doesn't light up my screen
