I really don't want my edge to reset to factory settings, so I'm wondering if there's a way to get around a forgotten security pattern? Thanks!

There is nothing fun about getting locked out of your device. At this point you have two options:
1) Try the Android Device Manager: https://www.google.com/android/devicemanager You will need to know your Gmail account & password to login.
2) Factory Reset: http://www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-203263/
