Why aren't custom ringtone notifications working?

In my contacts, I have selected different text message notification tones for certain people, but it is not working. I only get the default notification. Is there a way to fix this?

That app does not allow custom tones for each contact.    If that's what you need, the stock app may let you do so, or a third party texting app will give you that feature.

That is the stock messaging app, so I am a little confused.

No, the Verizon Messages app is not the stock Samsung texting app.  The stock app looks like an envelope, it amy be yellow, and is in your app drawer under the Samsung group.
