problems updating my apps since last update

Since I installed the most recent update, I have problems updating my apps.  When I update an app, it downloads immediately but takes 10 minutes or more to install.

I have cleared the cache, taken out the sim, tried to get help from Verizon and have a ticket number.  Nothing fixed it.

I am reluctant to do a factory reset because if it doesn't fix it, it will take a month to reload my apps.

Anyone else having this problem?

A month to reload all your apps? Wow.

OK, there is an intermediate step that might work. It's different from an Application Cache Clear.

It's called a System Cache Wipe, performed from the recovery menu:

  • Turn off your phone
  • Press and hold simultaneously the Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key
  • The phone will power up, and a recovery screen will display 30 seconds later.
  • Release all of the keys.
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight "wipe cache partition."
  • Press the Power key to select it
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight “yes” and press the Power key to confirm
  • When the wipe cache partition is complete, a “Reboot system” option will be highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart your phone

How much room do you have left on your phone? Are you losing battery power fast and if so what does it say that is using the battery power? You could use smart switch and do a full back up of your phone. It will save your personal settings and backup all your apps. I mean I would do that before the factory reset. If you do the factory reset make sure that you do the steps that stef7 has suggested it will clear up any old files in your phone and that will make your phone faster. Trying doing what stef7 has suggested it maybe your best option.

I may have exaggerated the time to reinstall apps if they take 10+ minutes to reinstall.

I did wipe the cache partition.  an update installed a little faster but not like it did before the update.

Is there a way to reinstall the update?

I have 8gb left on the phone storage.  The battery doesn't seem to drain any faster than before the update.

Install time... Does that include time to download?

Not all programs / apps are the same size nor will take the same time to install once downloaded...

The app will download immediately.  Then it just sits there saying "installing" and it will sit like that for up to 10 minutes or more.

Before the update, it downloaded and began to install immediately.  I understand that it takes longer to install apps depending on the size but now it doesn't begin to install the app immediately.

Also on the notification pull down, it used to show the download progress and then the install progress.  Now it shows only the download.

If you performed the System Cache Wipe (this would have been from the recovery menu on boot up, and NOT the App Cache Clear from Settings).... then yeah, this is strange behavior....

Assuming the phone otherwise runs properly, what I would do is this:

I would go into Settings and go to the Application Manager, and I would find Google Playstore, and I would Force Stop, which will probably result in it saying: Uninstall Updates? To which I would respond Yes. Then I would proceed to re-install the PlayStore.

I would then reboot the phone and try another download.

kathy65793 asked if you had room on your phone. Ignoring the amount of RAM you have for programs to run, when you download a program, it goes into the non-volatile memory that is persistent. That memory is finite. Don't know the model of S7 you have, let's say it's 16 or 32GB. So does all your downloaded content like movies and songs. How about pictures and videos you've taken? All of it is there. Do you have a micro SD card? If not, you may wish to invest and move a lot of this content onto the SD card. Another thing you can do is go to Settings Application Manager, and for each downloaded program "Move" a good portion of it to the SD card (if the program is designed to do this - it will let you do it, otherwise the option will be greyed out).

Conceptually, doing either or both of these things may result in quicker downloads and installs. I don't know your phone and how much content you have in non-volatile memory - but - I can see where, and I believe kathy65793 can too, where if it were so heavily utilized, it would make downloads and installs problematic from the PlayStore.

Good luck.

Sorry, you can't reinstall an update.

I use an app called AppMgrIII.  It identifies apps that can be moved to an SD card.  It also can be used to move the apps to the card.
