how do i be sure my verizon wireless is turned off so i can use my home internet when at home and not use my verizon data at those times?

when i called in she said i had to be sure the verizon wireless was off and i am signed into my home service. if both are available it will automatically go to the verizon one. i cannot just turn the wireless feature off or i won't be able to get to my network. please advise.

settings/wi-fi/advanced....smart switch will change to wi-fi.
