I just added a line and got my daughter a iPhone 5 for her birthday. Can I monitor her text messages?

Congrats on the new phone for your daughter. We do have Family Base which gives you the option to monitor the times the phone is in use. It can also restrict numbers from contacting her, plus many other things. We do not have the ability to monitor the actual text message content. You can view the times the messages were sent and to who they were sent to.
