Is 877-403-0835 claiming to be Verizon a SCAM?

Got a message from these folks.  Doesn't sound right to me...  Anyone know anything for sure?  I saw a number of comments on scam sites regarding the number, but I want to know from someone here...

Thanks

If it sounds too good to be true, or as you put it, "doesn't sound right", there's probably a catch.  Without knowing what you were told in the call, I'd say it was a scam.  There's been several reported on this forum over the past few weeks.

Being cautious, I didn't call them back.  They wanted me to use my ph# (which they recited) as a reference #.   It's a completely automated message saying there's been "a change in the status of my account" and that it is imperative that I call them back today at the 877 number, lest the sun explode and volcanoes begin erupting around the globe.  It concerned me a little because I've been behind on my phone bill for the last year or so...

You could always check your account via MyVerizon to see if something does, indeed, look like there's been "a change in the status" of your account, or call Financial Services if you think there's an issue with your billing:

I received the same call today, and also am behind a bit in payment. I'm just going to pay bill to date and ignore the 877 call. It creeps me out.

Have no fear, verba1. This is a valid Verizon number.  If you receive this message, it means that Verizon is attempting to reach you to discuss important information related to your account.

We apologize for the confusion.

I would love to know what the Continuity Marketing Operations Department job function is.

probably... marketing?

Seriously though, from what I've heard/read, they're basically the special sales team for some promotions that regular sales can't offer. I think they're also the people who call customers who have recently disconnected service to try to "win" them back.

DO NOT CALL BACK!      DO NOT CALL BACK!    DO NOT CALL BACK!
DO NOT CALL BACK!     DO NOT CALL BACK!

I followed advice from people here on this thread, and called Verizon at the *661 number.
I JUST NOW got off the phone with a Verizon Rep who told me about it.
I received a call this morning from 336-308-2420--where an automated voice identified me by name, told me to call ANOTHER number, 877-403-0835 regarding a change to my account that must be addressed "Today!"
They had my name, and they gave me my own number as a "reference number."

The 336 number is actually that of Level 3 Communications in Asheboro, NC--but the Verizon rep assured me that Level 3 has no idea about this.

She said they receive many complaints every day about this happening, and they have a task force that is working on it. I gave her all of the info that I had on the numbers.

She said that it is a shadowy international group that if you DO call them at the 877 number and give them any information, they will then pass the info on--and charge international phone calls to your number.

I VERY MUCH appreciate people on here giving advice and info about this--so I thought I would pass on what I just found out. To give you an idea as to how long I had to wait on hold while I typed my earlier message on this thread, they answered the very moment that I posted--so it is really not all that long of a wait.

Good Luck with it and PLEASE DO NOT CALL THEM BACK! Call *611 instead, and tell 'em what you experienced! They appreciate it.

Cheers!

I received a text two days ago saying to call that number, 877-403-0835, and dialed *611 to talk to a Verizon customer service rep because it seemed shady to me.  The rep I talked to confirmed that it is a phishing scam.  I also received two phone calls on my cell phone that day from Fort Wayne, IN numbers, 260-440-7931 and 260-918-0682, with the second number also calling my home number (which is unlisted).  Today I received a third call (260-440-7686) and a voice mail, saying to call the 877 number above saying there was a status change to my account.  I already know that is a scam number and have already talked to a customer service rep this week.

I want to know how they are getting my information, especially my home number, when it is unlisted?  What else can be done besides blocking the numbers when they just call with new numbers?

I just got off the phone with Verizon's online chat and they told me to report the number to their phishing department and she blocked the number from our phones.

So this sounds like it is a scam.
