There are a few channels that have been reserved. ESPN 3D is one of them. They had already added it to the line up (last year), they were just waiting for their systems to be able to display it properly. They are just now rolling out the 3D system to the STB's so now they are going to turn on the channel.
Quote from the articleVerizon reached the agreement to carry ESPN 3D last fall, as part of a broader carriage deal with ESPN Media Networks
Its not like it is cutting in line ahead of the HD channels or anything. It was alloted before they ran out of room. They are just now able to display it correctly.
Besides 3D is more popular than you would think. And since DTV already rolled out 3D. Verizon is falling behind and they want to be known as cutting edge.
