Aspect Ratio with FiOS TV app

Until 2 days ago, I only had telephone and internet with Verizon and was getting my TV with an antenna.  I called Verizon and signed up for the new custom plan.  The agent told me about the FiOS TV app.  She told me that I could use that immediately before a tech came out to update my FiOS equipment.  I was hoping to be able to use the app without the need for a set-top box. I've been getting used to the app for the past couple days.  I'm using it on a Samsung Smart TV which already had a Verizon TV app installed. 

This morning I wanted to watch a classic black and white movie on TCM.  For the first time I noticed that the aspect ratio was wrong.  The image filled the screen, causing it to be compressed from top to bottom.  In broadcast mode, I am able to change the aspect ratio in Menu/Picture, but this function does not work in the app.

Has anyone else had this problem with a smart TV?  I noticed one post about this issue on a tablet.  Any idea if I can do anything about this?
