DVR did not record

We have a multi-room DVR box in our house and had 4 shows set up to record Thursday evening (3-29-12). One at 8pm, one at 9pm, one at 10pm, and one at 1am. Friday morning, we noticed that not one of those shows recorded. After checking the DVR history, each show had an error message (time stamped 3:40am) attached saying it was not recorded because the set top box was not powered on. I know this is not true because we were watching TV on the DVR box on Thursday night while these shows were supposedly recording. The record light was also on the entire time, indicating that a recording was in progress.

I reset all of our boxes this morning and set up a test recording, which worked fine. My question is why would this have happened and what, if anything, can be done to prevent it from not recording in the future?
