I currently have Prime HD (or whatever the step up from Select HD is) and can watch ESPN 3 on my XBox 360. I'm thinking about downgrading to Select HD which doesn't include any sports channels in the programming. However, does anyone know if I would still have access to ESPN 3 since it is just an online service and technically is not part of the regular programming anyway?

No, the ESPN online bundle is only included if you subscribe to their TV channels.

Actually, ESPN3 is not the same as Watch ESPN and you should be able to access it no matter what level of TV service you have with FiOS. Here's what it says on ESPN's website:
"In order to receive access to ESPN3.com you must recieve your internet service, or, in some instances, your television service, through an affiliated provider."
Here's a link: http://espn.go.com/espn3/channelFinder and when you enter the information it says that it's available to Verizon high speed internet customers and FiOS customers, so yes, you'll still be able to access it. Only ESPN3 though.

I went to the link given. It asked for my zip code (11432 - Queens). But there were no providers listed, so I got no further. So far, I don't seem able to watch any live broadcasts on ESPN. I have FIOS internet only, but Verizon suggests at:
that I can get ESPN live broadcasts.
FIOS is new to my neighborhood.
Can I or can't I watch ESPN live broadcasts with FIOS interenet only?

No... not with internet only. For years I had DirecTV (which doesn't give access to ESPN3) and Cablevision (which does give access to TV subscribers) internet. if you try to log in as a cablevision customer, they're smart enough to tell you that you don't have TV service.
[Edit] I take it back.... VZ seems to do things differently. Not sure why you couldn't subscribe given what it says at the link...

Without a FIOS TV subscription, you cannot watch live games that air on one of the networks - you can only watch ones that originate on "ESPN3". This is a screenshot. Note that the "ESPN3" broadcast I can watch without looking in, but the ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNU broadcasts have a little key by them. If I want to watch these, I have to have TV service from a participating provider - not just internet service.
