External speakers work with streaming roku apps but not dvr

Finally got Cyber Acoustic speakers to work on TCL ROKU 32" set but only with the streaming ROKU apps. Can't hear anything recorded to my DVR. The speakers are plugged into the tv headphone jack. The DVR works great with the TV, usually. Does anyone know how I can fix this? Thanks very much.
