Menu turns ON STB

Question...

why when I press Menu does it turn on the STB???  I don't remember it originally functioning like this, but it's been this way for months and months now.

My problem is I have two STBs one on top of the other and I have one off and one on... then I just hit power on the remote to switch between them (have to do this until you put out a STB that does 4 records at once).  But now I have to search for programs through the DVR section as if I press Menu, it turns on (the off) STB, then both are active and taking remote commands.

This is a feature that was added recently to provide a discrete power on and power off capability.

If you have a programmable (or learning) remote control it provides a way to know for sure whether the STB is being turned on or turned off, which is very useful when programming a sequence where you want to send a series of commands to turn on or turn off several components (tv, STB, receiver, etc.) at the same time with the push of a single button.

If the remote control  is programmed to send a "menu" command to the STB it knows that  if the STB is off it will be turned on.   If the STB is already on, it will stay on.  Most programmers  would also program the remote to send the "exit" command after "menu" so that the menu is not left on the screen.

If the remote is programmed to send a "menu" command followed by the command for the "on/off" button, it knows that if the STB is on it will be turned off , and if the STB is off it will be turned on then turned off.   So no matter what the current state the STB is in, you know it will end up in the "off" state.

I assume the Verizon folks added this feature after getting a lot of feedback from companies and individuals who install and setup complex home theater systems when they discovered there was no way to keep the on/off state of the STB in synch with other components when turning everything on or off.

Since they could not add a new button to the remote, Verizon programmers had to add the power on capability to one that was already there, and for whatever reason they picked the "menu" button.

Actually, this was added becuse many subscribers have their remote (from Verizon) set to turn both the TV and the STB on / off simultaneously with the power switch on the remote in STB mode.  The problem was (is) that often they would get out of sink and lets say only the STB was "turned off" but the TV remained on.  Without the "Press Menu" message the TV would appear to be off (blank screen) when it was really on.

I know it's dumb, but that was the reason given for the change a while ago.

I would suggest searching the guide. Press guide------>press left arrow button------->select search from the listed options. Then you wont have to use the menu button and turn on your other STB.
