Are you sure it's not going to channel 1985? Then we'd know it needs a new flux capacitor.
Seriously, though, it sounds like it's just plain worn out. That does happen. You've several options. You can take it apart and try to clean the buttons, contact Verizon and see if they will give you a new remote, buy a new remote from Verizon, or buy a "universal" remote from your favorite store.
When it comes to "universal" remotes, I'm partial to the Harmony remotes from Logitech. They make it very easy to control a system that has anything more than a STB and TV. I'm not thrilled with the way the product line has been managed over the years, but the remotes are still a good product, especially if you can get them on sale.
Good Luck

I've had my remote default to channel 1983. Once in a blue moon that will happen and I've had mine for 5 years. It's not a persistent issue so it doesn't bother me.

Folks, if you don't get the joke about 1985 and the "flux capacitor," google "flux capacitor." Then sit back and watch a good movie.
Enjoy,

Yes, I'm old enough to remember that. I think that's from "Back to the Future". It really didn't dawn on me at the time but I get it.

I have to agree with gs0b. I have the Harmony remote from Logitech as well and I happen to love it. My remote was becoming tempermental too and I got a replacement from Verizon. That one did the same thing. I have had no problems with the Harmony and it's pretty easy to program as well.
