My QIP-7232 2 is acting up and is going to be replaced. My questions are:
1) is there a way to transfer the programming stored on the DVR to the external hard drive,
2) when I swap out the DVR's, is the new DVR going to accept the external hard drive and its contents, or will it want to reformat it?
Thanks!

Answer 1. In one word, "No." You can copy the material to a DVD recorder, but otherwise there is no method to transfer content from one DVR to another (copyright and related reasons). For additional information and some ideas, check this link:
Answer 2. In another word, "No." The current external drive content is "married" to the current DVR. The new DVR will ask to reformat the old external drive when it is recognized.
