I have a non-HD TV in my basement and it currently uses a Motorola Model:QIP2500 set top box. I am getting a HD TV for that room. Do I need to order a new step box for the HD TV?

You will need an HD STB for a HDTV. They don't even give out STBs that aren't HD any more as far as I know. I've been told the new STBs are for HD TVs but are also used for non HDTVs. However, your STB is an old one only for older non HD TVS. The HDTV STBs are more expensive each month too.

Yes, QIP2500's are not HD. If you want to get the HD signal you need to upgrade the box.
