now I notice that a show set to record say at 10 pm  now says it started recording at 9:59. Probably going to miss some endings....

That's how it's supposed to work.  There is a 30-second buffer built in to the beginning and end of every recording, so you don't miss anything if the show starts a few seconds early or ends a few seconds late.  I've found it quite helpful actually.
