Can the TV set top box be scheduled to turn off at a future time (e.g., in 30, 60, 90 minutes)?

No. There is not currently a "sleep timer" in the STB.

I think there are much better things I'd rather they focus their efforts on ... just use the sleep timer on the TV, leaving the STB on all the time doesn't hurt anything.

I agree completely. I have never understood the desire to turn the STB off using a timer. I leave all of mine on 24/7, doesn't hurt anything, consumes almost exactly the same power, and means that I don't have to aim the remote exactly the right direction to get the TV and STB to turn on or off concurrently.
