I have no interest whatsoever in most of the widgets. Is there a way to delete the "extra" ones, specifically so it doesn't default to something like sports when all I want from the widgets is the current local temperature.

Don't see how you can do that since its a function of the Verizon Service and not specific to a STB.

Why does YOUTUBE bring up videos but gives a error message when I try to play them?

I've also been getting the same message:  ERROR PLAYING VIDEO.  (And no video gets played)
