dvr'd programs

Several times I have tried to watch a DVR program and it freezes up in the middle of the program. then after I have to reset the box I go back to try and watch my show again and the program is completely gone. This is really frustrating when I'm in the middle of recording that same program that I'm trying to watch so when I have to reset the box I miss a minute or two of the program.
Not only that but there are times when I press buttons on the remote and the set top box doesn't respond and then a minute or two later all the buttons I pressed respond at once. How do I keep this from happening?

Ya and have  you had the menu come up that two programs are about to record. When you say ok everything freezes?
