set box and remote

is there a way to control a set box with a remote while in another room, something like what directv has with their RF remote?

Yes.

My STB/DVD is downstairs in Den.

I can watch what I recorded using upstairs STB.

You will need to find an IR extender as verizon boxes are IR controlled.
Or you can use the My FIOS app which has the ability to control a STB anyhwere in your house as long it is on the same network as your STB.
