The settop box keeps falling off and don't want it to get damaged.  We have one of those new plastic screen TVs only about an inch thick, so won't  balance. Is it ok to keep the little box on a shelf or otherwise off of there?

Hi there.

It's best that the Set top box is in a place where it won't constantly fall down and have a potential for breaking.

A shelf is fine.

Keep these simple rules in mind when placing your set top box somewhere.

The Motorola manual states:

Do not place the terminal in an enclosed area where the cooling vents are blocked or impede the
flow of air through the ventilation openings.

• Install the terminal so that its position does not interfere with its proper ventilation. For example,
do not place the terminal on a bed, sofa, rug, or similar surface that could block the ventilation
openings.
• Install the terminal away from heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, and stoves.
Installation of the terminal near consumer electronics devices, such as stereo receiver/amplifiers
and televisions, is permitted as long as the air surrounding the terminal does not exceed 40º C
(104º F).
• Place the terminal on a flat surface not prone to vibration or impact.
• Do not install the terminal in an area where condensation occurs.
• To prevent the temporary loss of guide data and cause a temporarily non-responding terminal, do
not plug the AC power cord into a switched power outlet.
• Do not move the terminal while it is plugged in.

"Set Top Box" is actually only an expression or phrase that folks use to designate the device.  It is not really necessary to keep the device on top of your TV set, especially if as you indicate it keeps falling off.  I know you would have eventually figured this out, but I thought it might be helpful to let you know how these things work before you destroy the equipment and end up with a bill from Verizon.  Of course if all else fails you can look around for an old CRT TV with a top wide enough to defy gravity.

For reference, April 1st is still about a week away.

As the Fire Chief of Kansas City said:  "If you can't get the truck closer to the fire, reel out more hose."
