I can get to the menu using the AV button, and by repeating the entry, the menu moves but I can't select the input source

I assume you are talking about using the FIOS remote?
It may depend on the TV.
My tv switches to the selected input after a few seconds.
Even though mine switches, I still have to wait a bit longer before the menu times out and disappears.
Unfortuantely, FIOS remote is mainly good at turning TV off/on and adjusting volume.
