Changing Verizon E-mail Account Info on iPhone 3gs

I am trying to change the e-mail settings on my iPhone 3gs per Verizon's recent eemail but am having difficulties.  Under Verizon Mail, I have the following:  Account - ON, Incoming mail server host - pop,verizon.net; Outgoing mail server SMTP - smtp.verizon.net; under advanced Use SSL - ON, Authentication - password, Server port 465.  I can't receive or send any e-mails.  I have also turned the phone on and off several times.  I made the changes on my laptop in Outlook with no problem.  Can someone help?.

Ok, e-mail seems to be working now.  But the problem is that the phone is dowloading all of my old e-mail messages, 50 at a time.  When I delete the 50, another 50 come up.  Any ideas?  Thanks!
