Our email accounts were supposed to be closed when our DSL was cancelled/disconnected. They are still active and I am still receiving email. I have called DSL tech support and been told it may take up to 48 hours, it has been over 48 hours. I talked with tech support yesterday and an agent told me they may never close and I may always receive email, that doesn't even make sense. I can't seem to get any help, I'm told they are closed but, I can still log in and am still receiving emails.
Months later the email accounts associated with our cancelled Verizon DSL are still accessible. No one seems to be able to get them deleted.
As part of recent changes they decided to let you have your email as long as you keep accessing it. They have said that if you don't use it for six months. As you have found out its near impossible to find someone who nows how to kill the email account immediately.
I have the same thing on one of my accounts that was in NY. I recently decided to sell the house and terminated the account and I know its still getting email as every so often some friend asks if I saw their email. I remind them to use my FL account. I went a few rounds with support but since the account is closed they can't figure out what to do. I have decided to stop accessing the email so it will probably close or implode from email overload in a few months (this particular account is a very old one (originally nynex) and gets 50 to 100 spam messages a day).
