I bought a new computer with Windows 8 as the OS. I can't figure out how to set up my email on the system. Help!

Are you talking about Verizon email?
If so you can use webmail otherwise, as Win8 doesn't support pop, you will have to use some other 3rd party email client - Verizon mail only supports pop not imap that win8 supports.
here's another thread on the same subject. It has a couple of suggestions on possible work arounds.

If you are trying to use the APP that came with WIN8, it won't work. That APP doesn't work with POP email. You will need to go to a different email client. Windows Live Mail (Outlook) and Thunderbird are both good.
