Getting Verizon e-mail on a non-Verizon android phone

I couldn't find this topic elsewhere.  I have a new Verizon e-mail account, but have not been able to find the right app to download  to my non-Verizon android cell phone.  I don't have FiOS, so the FiOS apps don't help.  Suggestions?

Doesn't the phone have a built-in email app? I thought that was a standard part of the Android system. While my Android phone happens to be from Verizon, it has a generic email app that I use, all I had to do was enter the necessary definitions for my Verizon email.

Or am I missing something here?
