Intermittent SMTP error when emailing from Android Smartphone

I have verified my settings multiple times (SSL enabled, using port 465 on smtp.verizon.net, etc) and even tried a separate email app (K9), but I am getting an intermittent error when trying to send messages from my Android phone. Here is the response that I get: Negative SMTP Reply: 421 4.4.2 Timeout while waiting for command.
