I was sent the following communication:
At Verizon, we continue our efforts to enhance your online experience as well as ensure ongoing security for our Internet customers. As a result, Verizon Online has modified the way email is handled when sent or received through an email application other than MyVerizon.
If you only use MyVerizon to access your email account, no action is required and you may disregard this email. If you do, however, use other applications to access your Verizon email, such as Outlook Express®, you will need to modify your email settings to take advantage of enhanced security we now offer.
In order to make these modifications, please visit http://verizon.com/emailsettings for information about the email settings you need to update. Additional information may also be available by going to our online forum at http://forums.verizon.com/.
Thanks for being a valued Verizon Online customer and we encourage you to act now to ensure your email account has the proper settings on a going-forward basis.
The page recommended I change the port setting from 25 to a different value.
THAT DID NOT WORK! I GOT NO CONNECTION! I changed it BACK!
Go **bleep** yourselves!

Shamika_Vz,
The info on the page you note is in conflict with the info sent in the recent e-mail. If we change our settings as instructed in the e-mail - we can't send or receive e-mail. The most recent e-mail has info on e-mail settings that do not work.
Jack
The new info is accurate if you want to use SSL. And at some point they may make SSL mandatory.
Note at least one other user reported having to change his timeout value. Works fine for me at 1 minute, but he said he had to change his to 3 minutes.
I changed my port numbers to those given in the email and could not send or receive messages. I did a System Restore, and changed the port numbers back to what they were and my email works fine. I have Windows Live Mail 2011.
I re-read the email message again and it specifically says changes to Your Verizon Yahoo! Email Account. I've been reading other posts and there seems to be Verizon.net accounts and Verizon Yahoo accounts. I didn't know there were different types. When I first signed up, I had Verizon with MSN and switched to Yahoo. It seems this port number change applies to the Verizon.net accounts and not the Verizon Yahoo accounts.
Anyway, I changed my settings back to what they were and my email is working again.
Are these changes just for FIOS users?
No, I believe it is for DSL users too..
I have exactly the same issue, and I'm a verizon.net user on Fios.
I got the e-mail notice to change my Outlook 2007 accounts to the new settings - Incoming server (Pop3) to 995; Incoming server (SMTP) to 465, select SSL, and that my outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication, and to use the same settings as my incoming mail server.
Double checked that everything was input correctly and tried to test account settings.
Failed - timed out after about a minute due to no response from the mail server. Checked again - all settings were correct. Again failed.
Closed Outlook and restarted. Checked settings and re-tried both Send/Receive and Test Account Settings.
Failed again due to timeout.
Went back in and reset to defaults (original ports and non-SSL settings). Worked perfectly.
Why does Verizon send out these e-mails and when you perform the appropriate maintenance ... It fails to work??
Very frustrating.
