Outlook Express Issue

I receveid the notification to change my incoming and outgoing ports and servers.  I kept getting an error message that my POP server had not responded, did I want to wait or stop.  I kept hitting "wait" for about 5 minutes.  I then went through the verizon site and had it check my email set up.  I was alerted that everything was fine.  I restarted my computer and I'm still getting the POP server not responding message.  Do I need to change the account name which is currently set as "incoming.verizon.net" to the new incoming POP server name?  This is really frustrating.  Thank you.

Yes you do need to set the POP3 server to pop.verizon.net - port 995 and SSL needs to be enabled.

Thank you very much.  I have done all of that, restarted my pc and am still getting the error message that the the POP server is not responding.  Very frustrating.

Make sure that you do not have the authentication set to "Authenticated POP" or "APOP" or any of its equivalents. These servers don't support it. I don't have Outlook Express here, so I'm not entirely sure where the setting would be.

Screenshots are really helpful in these instances. (Just make sure to block/remove your username/password.)

Thank you so much everyone.  I double checked my settings and it turns out I had forgotten to check "SSL".  It's working now.

I am using MS Entourage for Mac version 11.  I have gone back and forth and tried to change my port to 465 several times. I can receive mail fine but I can't send anything. I quit Entourage and restart every time I make a change and every time I open it back up, the test message I am trying to send is still sitting in my outbox until I get a message saying the operation timed out.

My outgoing server is set at outgoing.verizon.net

I have the box "SMTP service requires SSL" checked.

I have the box "override default SMTP port : 465" checked

I do NOT have the box checked for: "SMTP server requires authentication"

Please help. I'm at my wits end with this nonsense!

Check the authentication box. The SMTP server has to authenticate with your username and password. This is somewhat confusing, since "authenticated pop" or "APOP" is a different setting that needs to not be checked.

so should I uncheck that top box and only check "SMTP server requires authentication?" I've tried different variations of having these boxes checked/unchecked and haven't hit upon the correct combo...

I'm not sure, as your screenshots aren't showing up. Once they are approved they should show up.

Well. In any case, neither option works. I've checked all three boxes. And I've unchecked the top box (SSL) and checked the "SMTP authorization" box and nothing works. I realize I have an email program that no one uses, but I can't believe I can't get any help with this crap. It's very frustrating. I keep trying to send a message and it takes about 3 minutes till it tells me the server timed out.
