I have tried all of the settings for the outgoing smtp server and all I get is a non discript protocall error.
email client : Pegasus
outgoing mail settings: Direct ssl connect
smtp.verizon.net
port 465
time out 90 sec
user name and password log in
Finger printing : off
old settins with outgoing.verizon.net work fine. no joy on new smtp settings
incoming mail works fine with new ssl and port 995.
what should I do next?

Solved! Go to Correct Answer
SomeGirl and TNS_2 both replied to a similar issue with that client http://forums.verizon.com/t5/Verizon-net-Email/New-Settings-on-Pegasus-Mail/td-p/600751/page/2. If you can not get support from Pegasus I guess you will have to go to a web based client or other 3rd party solution, I highly recommend Zohomail (free version) if you want a full featured web based client http://email.about.com/od/freeemailreviews/tp/free_email.htm

Thanks, I am looking at Thunderbird now ...looks like it is working on received mail. Will give it a try.
