John,  I saw your post about your Mac computer and just could not ignore it (even though I have tons of other stuff to catch up on), so I specifically created a community sign-in to provide you with my verizon technical support experiences.  DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT make the changes.  If you do, the e-mail setting changes will most definitely take your AppleMail account off-line.  The first two notices I received about this from verizon, I called tech support, and BOTH agents told me that because I have a Mac, I do not need to make any changes.  Then I received a THIRD e-mail from verizon advising me that I have yet to make the changes.  At this point, I subsequently called Verizon tech support again (subsequently, an additional 3 different times because of difficulties).  The first agent told me that I was ill-advised by the first two agents who told me not to make any changes because I have a Mac, and that I most definitely needed to change the e-mail settings.  He guided me thru the process on the phone, and low and behold, my AppleMail account was off-line.  I tried everything to bring it back on-line;  however, nothing worked.  I won't bore you with my subsequent 2nd call to tech support - she just couldn't help me.  I called tech support for the 3rd and final time that evening.  I gave an account of my huge problem to the agent, who had to put me on hold "in order to consult with his colleague(s).  When he got back on the phone, he gave me the poor excuse that it was an "Apple issue" and that I needed to call Apple tech support.  Typical - never take the blame for something - always blame a third party (just like Western Digital did about their portable hard-drives and the OS10.9 back-ups).  I told this tech fellow, who had put me on hold, that I was changing my settings back to the way they were originally and confirmed with him that my re-instatement of the original "old" settings were all accurate.  To be truthful, he advised against me doing this, but I did it anyway.  Low and behold, once I went back to my old settings, I was able to bring my AppleMail account back on-line, and plan on leaving it this way - unless something does, in fact, go wrong.  In the meantime, I understand that I haven't provided you with instructions on how to make the changes, because I believe you should not do it.  Should you not concur, you can always call verizon tech support, and one of the tech people will guide you through the entire process.  Good luck, whatever you decide.  In any event, my MacBook Pro is almost 3 years old, and I don't have an Apple tech support contract.  I plan on attempting to contact them by e-mail to advise of my experiences with Verizon.

I had precisely the same experience, though without the agony of calling Verizon.  I attempted to make the changes suggested in the Verizon "third attempt" email.  For the POP 3 server I substituted pop.verizon.net for incoming.verizon.net.   I attempted to make the recommended change for the SMTP server and found that the change could not be accommodated by the program.  When I attempted to check my email having made the POP 3 change, I found that my incoming messages were no longer available.  The sent messages were fine (since I had been unable to make the recommended change for the outgoing server).

I reverted to the original POP 3 setting, i.e., incoming.verizon.net, and the incoming messages were restored.  I concluded that Verizon's advice about making the setting changes is simply not applicable to my iMac, although I haven't attempted to verify this with anyone at Apple or at Verizon.  (It's not easy to get a human being on the line, and the prior writer's experience doesn't provide much confidence that Verizon reps will be able to help.)

I will just stay with my current settings until or unless I find that I can no longer receive or send Verizon messages via my Apple mail account.

I must say that Verizon seems to have missed the boat on this issue.

I received the exact message in triplicate, as well as a voice mail from Verizon.  I, however, have a PC.  I have tried repeatedly to have someone from Verizon explain why this is necessary, and help me with it.  No luck.  Do you know if I need to do anything, and if so -- what?? This is beyond frustrating. I tried using their "guide" but it helps not at all.

All of these huge conglomerates are only interested in one thing - REVENUE!!!  Verizon and Comcast both suck - I think they themselves don't know what they're doing, and their customer service/tech support are virtually non-existent.  Wish I could help, but I was self-taught using a PC a million years ago.  Once I went Mac, I never looked back.  In the meantime, I understand you have already contacted Verizon, but the tech support # is {edited for privacy}.  My only suggestion is not to call them again until you have plenty of time (evenings are best) and resolve to stay with them on the phone as long as it takes for them to walk you through the entire process AND confirming that everything is working properly before disconnecting with them.  They should know - they likely all work with PC's and don't have a clue about Apple computers!

Unfortunately, I did not write that tech support number down, and now it has been edited.  IT WAS NOT THE ONE I HAD so I don't know if this was the problem?  Mine is an 800 number.  Thanks.

I also am confused as to WHY they want me to do this as I use a "verizon.net" address, not Outlook or Apple mail.  I'm not a computer genius, just an average everyday user.  Whenever I follow the instructions that are given - I still wind up at my regular email site.

This is so crazy. And the tech support 800 number is NOT for landlines (my mistake) so I am not surprised THAT faction couldn't help me.

If you check your email on the verizon webmail site then you dont have to do anything. The email is for people using mac mail or some other email client to check email. If you have a iphone, ipad or any other moblie device that you use to check email, you will have to change setting on those devices.

If you still need the number for tech support, use the contact us link at the bottom of this page!

the tech support number i phoned many, many times is 800-837-4966.  (i think verizon edits it out.)  in the meantime, i don't wish to log into verizon just to retrieve my e-mails - i want them to come directly to my mac!
