Unable to use Mac Mail from U.S. Virgin Islands

Yesterday I was home, in mainland US, and was able to use Mac Mail to get my e-mail from Verizon.net without problem.
I am now on the Virgin Island and am unable to access my e-mail. I use POP settings.
Running Max OS 10.10.2 and Mail 8.2
Any suggestions?
