Verizon.net email account

I am setting up a new computer for my parents who are seniors.  They have had a Verizon.net email account for many years.  I was not aware that these accounts had been transitioned to other mail providers (Yahoo in parrticular) last year.  I"m unable to log in or even find indication of the mail account.  When I try to log in to Yahoo using the Verizon account as user id, it fails and the forget password option does not work.  Any ideas here?  I'm getting desperate!
