Why does the e-mail change from unopened to opened when using the Spam tab in Verizon Netmail?

I was on chat yesterday for a long time with a support person named Plaban and asked this :

In Verizon Netmail program there are four tabs across the top of my Inbox e-mails. Delete, Spam, Move To and Actions.

Along the left side are opened (unchecked) boxes.

E-mails arrive with BOLD letters.  If I know it’s SPAM I check the box, then click on the tab called Spam.

It goes to the SpamDetector Folder and now the BOLD changed to regular type and the SPAM e-mail is opened.  WHY?

The Tech INSISTED to see my screen and I refused on privacy grounds.

So Verizon, why does this happen and when will it get fixed?

because it is in fact opened by the Spam detector software.   True they could have done this differently but they didn't.

Thanks but doesn't it sometime get sent back to the spammer that the e-mail was opened?  I know we should never open Spam because of some code that's buried deep in one pixel that triggers the spammer that it's an active e-mail address.

Definitely not for the spam detector code.  You have some control using the settings in the Webmail interface.  Personally I use a client and have the client set to not ever send back and not to open web pointers unless I tell it to.
