I have heard that sending a spammer an unsubscribe message is the worst thing you can do. If I just hit the "spam"
button in my email will that stop it from coming in the next time? My kids play games on my computer and I seem to be getting more and more spam in my inbox.

Responding to spam is not a good idea. Marking it as spam probably won't stop the messages either. Some email providers are better than others at that, but from some of the posts on this forum, I don't think VZ mail will stop it.
One way to keep it out of your inbox is to create a filter each time you get a spam message and send mail from that sender to trash.
The best way to elimianate spam is be careful about who you give your email address to. I have an email that I use strictly for sites that I do not want to recieve mail from. Once a week I just delete everything. With the kids playing games that is a policy I would recommed. Use a provider that you don't already use.

Excellent advise from Walt, I would add if you are running windows setup accounts for each person that uses the computer and make sure none of them have administrator rights. (Standard user is best under win 7)
Also make sure UAC is set to the highest level. This will not reduce spam per se but may ward off malware and or viruses which can sneak in through email. Also do not share email accounts or passwords.
