can't make calls, network not responding when try to text

My phone was working just fine this morning. I talked to my mom. Then a couple of hours later, I tried to call my son's school to let them know he is home sick, and it wouldn't make the call. My phone showed on the display that it was sending out the call, but then the screen would just go to my wallpaper. The call never rang on the other end. Just silence. I have the Samsung Intensity III, prepaid plan. Unlimited everything. I tried to turn the phone off, then back on. I tried taking the battery out and then putting it back in. I tried sending a text to my husband, asking him to try to call my phone, and I got the message "Network not responding". I can't dial *228 as suggested by troubleshooting, as the call won't go through. I can't call Verizon, because my cellphone is my ONLY phone.

Is anyone else having an issue? Can anyone tell me how to get my phone to work?
