Using iPhone 5c in Spain and France

I just got the Verizon Global plan for data and voice for our trip to Spain and France.  What it offers will work perfectly for our data and voice needs.  So, what do I have to do to make my new iPhone 5c ready so it will work when we land in Spain?

I've been told a couple of different things:

1.  Just wait until I get to Spain.  Then turn the phone on.  Let it get itself turned on.  Then turn it off.  The turn it on again and it will be ready to go, and I'll get further instructions over the phone.

2.  Just before leaving the USA, turn my phone off.  Remove the SIM card for 60 seconds.  Put the SIM card back in and don't turn the phone on again until I arrive in Spain.  When I turn the phone on in Spain, it will be ready to go and I'll get further instructions over the phone.

So which is correct?  Or are both correct--do I perform the SIM card removal step here in the USA and then do step 1 in Spain?  Or something else?
